Zen House of Zhu Baochu is a renovation project that reimagines a historic Jiangnan dwelling as a contemporary space for gathering, exhibition, hospitality, and living. Respecting the original structural system and minimizing demolition, the project transforms a series of fragmented residential rooms into more open and connected spaces suited to modern use. Expanded courtyards bring additional daylight deep into the interiors while becoming shared spatial anchors between rooms. At the same time, contemporary daylighting and environmental systems are carefully integrated within the traditional roof structure, avoiding unnecessary intervention to the historic foundation. Through the use of modern materials and landscape strategies, the project creates a quiet dialogue between heritage and contemporary life — allowing the old residence to evolve while preserving its original character and atmosphere.
