Launched in 2018, the Shuangshan Island Lighthouse International Design Competition invited global proposals for a 64,600 SF site within the island's planned Slow Village. Organized by the Zhangjiagang Shuangshan Island Tourism Resort Administrative Committee and Xiangban Cultural Tourism Group, the competition selected SoBA as the winner among 33 international entries. The design is inspired by the imagery of "waves" and "sails," with the hotel buildings conceived as a series of gently undulating volumes and the lighthouse as a sculptural vertical landmark. Arranged along a shared axis, the lighthouse defines a public plaza on the eastern edge, while the guest rooms are dispersed within a water landscape to the west, creating a more intimate environment. The lighthouse gradually reveals its form along the approach and culminates in a panoramic suite at the top, overlooking the island and the Yangtze River. At night, integrated lighting transforms it into a visible beacon, reinforcing its role as both destination and symbol.
