The project was commissioned following an invited competition. Located within a dense residential district in Kunshan, Block Kindergarten creates a protected and imaginative environment for children amidst a complex urban context. The design combines architecture and landscape to form a series of layered courtyards, gardens, and play spaces that buffer the surrounding city while maintaining visual connections to nature and light. Inspired by the logic of modular blocks, the 21-class kindergarten is composed of stacked and shifted volumes that create a playful yet ordered spatial experience. Natural light, color, planting gardens, and rainwater landscapes are integrated throughout the campus, encouraging children to explore, observe, and engage with the environment. Rather than isolating itself from the city, the project carefully frames moments of openness — allowing architecture, landscape, and learning to grow together.
